OK, so it may be dark and dreary, and you may be ready for the sunshine, but I promise you,  no matter what......Spring IS just around the corner. 

Many of us think about Spring cleaning our homes this time of year.  What about Spring cleansing our body?  We get rid of the junk and clutter in our homes, we change the oil in our cars to make them run better, and we brush our teeth and visit our dentist to keep them pearly white.  But have you thought about what's happening inside your body?  We are bombarded with toxins on a daily level. Our food is depleted of essential nutrients. Many are overweight, stressed, and lack the energy they need to perform at their best each and every day.  Read our article on healthy cleansing for the body.

Revolving Lunge Pose (ardha namaskar parsvakonasana)

Opens the chest and hips, stretches the back muscles, and nourishes and realigns the spine.

From table position, step the right foot between the hands, bringing the right knee directly over the right ankle in a low lunge. The left knee and foot rests on the floor. Place a blanket under the knee if uncomfortable.

Bring the left elbow to the right knee and place the palms together in a prayer position.

Use the arms to press the right shoulder up and back, twisting the upper back. Look straight ahead or up towards the ceiling. The palms are at the center of the chest and the fingers are pointing up towards the throat.

Breathe and hold for 4-8 breaths.

To release: exhale the arms back down to the floor in a low lunge position.

Repeat on other side.

Signing With Your Baby or Toddler

It's not surprising that babies can learn how to sign. Both their understanding of language and their motor skills develop much faster than their ability to speak. And they love to mimic: Most babies, for example, discover how to wave and point long before they can say "bye bye" or "look at that!"

The idea of taking this one step further and teaching babies a vocabulary of signs was inspired by child development expert Joseph Garcia.

Having discovered how easily hearing babies of deaf parents learned sign language, he also noticed that these babies appeared less demanding than babies who didn't know sign language because they could express their thoughts and needs more easily. To continue reading, click here.



Cranberry Pecan Lime Tart (serves 12)

This recipe, created by Wendy Roberts, won Best Dessert in VT's 2011 Chefs' Challenge. As a kid, Roberts loved baking holiday cookies for her neighbors. "I realized I really liked the joy it brought to other people," she says. That's why she enrolled in a baking and pastry program and left her desk job to work full-time for a bakery. Wendy thought up this version of a pecan tart while rushing to make dessert for a party. Lime vodka "leaves behind a lighter, crisper flavor" than whiskey in the rich, chewy filling.


  • 1 1/2 sticks (6 oz.) butter or margarine, softened
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup light brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup light corn syrup
  • 1/3 cup molasses
  • 2 Tbs. lime vodka
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 3 Tbs. unsalted butter, melted
  • 3/4 cup chopped pecans
  • 1/3 cup chopped dried cranberries
  • 1/8 tsp. grated lime zest


1. To make Crust: Cream butter and sugar in bowl with electric mixer 3 minutes, or until smooth and fluffy. Add egg yolk and vanilla, and beat until smooth. Add flour 1 cup at a time, beating until just combined and dough comes together. Knead dough with hands 3 or 4 times, then shape into flat disk. Press dough disk onto bottom and sides of 10-inch tart pan with removable bottom, and freeze 2 hours, or overnight.

2. To make Filling: Preheat oven to 350°F. Beat eggs in large bowl until frothy. Whisk in brown sugar, corn syrup, molasses, vodka, and salt until sugar dissolves. Beat in melted butter. Fold in pecans, cranberries, and lime zest with spatula.

3. Remove Crust from freezer, and place in center of baking sheet. Spread Filling in Crust, making sure cranberries and pecans are evenly distributed. Bake tart 35 to 45 minutes, or until Filling is set and Crust is golden-brown. Cool in pan before unmolding and serving.

  • Sodium: 217 mg
  • Fiber: 1 g
  • Sugar: 29 g
