Once again, Fall is just around the corner.  I hope you had some time to enjoy the summer months and are now ready to get back into full swing with us.

We're putting the final touches on our Healthy Body Challenge where you will have the chance to enter into a monthly draw for $500 or even win a grand prize of $25,000!  Keep watching for more news.

Try our Athlete Yoga class at Britannia Community Center for FREE on Thursday September 13 at 9:30am.

Along with our 6:30pm Tuesday night Yoga classes at Greentree Village, we've added a second 6:30pm Yoga class on Thursday nights, both of which I'll be teaching. 

We also decided we needed to offer you something TOTALLY DIFFERENT this Fall, so we're adding Zumba on Monday nights starting Sept 17 from 6:30pm - 7:30pm.  No, I'm not teaching this one, but if you're ready for a great cardio workout, while having a ton of fun, this will definitely be the class for you!  You can register for our Greentree classes by going to www.intoyoga.ca/Registration_Form.htm.

We also  know many of you have enjoyed the results you're getting when selecting our Yoga Pack at Greentree Village, so we've included it in our offering again this Fall.

Hip Openers

It seems like hip openers are the most commonly requested asana in classes I teach, so I thought I'd include this series I found at www.yoga.about.com.

Use this sequence in your home practice when you want to work on stretching your hips and hamstrings. Doing these poses at home gives you the chance to take your time going deeper into each pose. Try staying in each pose for at least five breaths. Click here to run through the sequence of Half Lotus, Pigeon, Knee to Ankle, Standing Forward Bend, Pyramid Pose (aka Alternate Leg Stretch), and Standing Straddle Forward Bend (aka Spread Leg Stretch).


What's "Skinny Fat"?

Do you know someone who can eat whatever he or she wants without ever gaining an ounce? No need to be envious anymore, because science says body composition—the ratio of fat to lean body mass—is a greater determinant of health than just plain body weight.

Normal-weight obesity, also known as “skinny fat,” is a growing problem in the United States (and Canada). These terms describe a person’s body composition that is high in fatty tissue in comparison to lean tissue, while still within normal limits of the body mass index (BMI). Those who are considered to be “skinny fat” do not appear to be overweight; however, they have a high percent body fat, especially visceral fat—the fat that surrounds vital organs.

Yoga for Athletes

As an athlete, chances are most of your workout sessions can be described by one work: intensity.

You want to constantly push the barriers of your physical capabilities and as such, the more intense you can make any given workout session, the faster your progress will be.

So when you hear the term 'yoga', you automatically write it off as something that is definitely not going to be benefiting you. For you, that isn't a 'workout', it's a stretching session.

Baby Sign Language Opens Doors to Early Communication

There’s nothing sweeter to a parent’s ears than the sounds of their baby cooing, babbling and the first “mama” or “da-da” words.

And there’s nothing more frustrating than hearing the cries of these same tiny tots who don’t yet have the words to express their wants and needs.

“Baby sign language can be a great way to help you communicate with your baby even before language develops,” says Tara Kehoe, a Villa Park resident and speech pathologist affiliated with Easter Seals DuPage and the Fox Valley Region. “Baby sign language helps babies who are ready to communicate, but can’t quite bridge the gap to full speech.”

That gap between desire to communicate and ability often leads to frustration and tantrums, explains Kehoe, whose 18-month-old daughter, Libby, learned to communicate with more than 20 signs before her first birthday and five before starting to make word approximations.  Click here to continue reading.


Golden Thai Curry with Green Beans  (Serves 6)


“Thai curries tend to be the spiciest and sweetest of them all,” says Trang. “The curry pastes are composed of fresh herbs and bulbs, employ red or green chiles, and are balanced with coconut milk.”


  • 1 lb. Yukon gold potatoes, peeled and cubed (2½ cups)
  • 3 medium carrots, cut into ½-inch-thick half moons (1½ cups)
  • ½ lb. green beans, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 1 Tbs. coconut oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped (1¼ cups)
  • 1 clove garlic, minced (1 tsp.)
  • 2 ½Tbs. yellow curry paste
  • 1 Tbs. cashew butter
  • 1 13.5-oz can light coconut milk
  • 1 tsp. sugar or palm sugar
  • 1 red bell pepper, diced (1 cup)
  • 2 Tbs. thinly sliced basil leaves
  • 3 kaffir lime leaves or 1 Tbs. lime juice

1. Bring large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook potatoes 7 minutes; remove with slotted spoon, and drain. Add carrots, cook 10 minutes; remove with slotted spoon, and drain. Add green beans, and cook 5 minutes; remove with slotted spoon, drain, and set aside.

2. Heat oil in pot over medium heat. Add onion, and cook 7 minutes, or until starting to brown. Stir in garlic, curry paste, and cashew butter; cook 
1 minute. Add coconut milk, 1/2 cup water, and sugar; bring mixture to a simmer. Stir in potatoes, carrots, and bell pepper; simmer 10 minutes. 
Add green beans and basil, and cook 2 minutes more. Stir in lime leaves just before serving.

: Calories: 240; Protein: 4 g; Total Fat: 13 g; Saturated Fat: 6 g; Carbohydrates: 27 g; Cholesterol: 0 mg; Sodium: 316 mg Fiber: 5 g; Sugar: 5 g
