Into Yoga Newsletter
December 2009 - Issue 37

Gosh, where do the days go?  Thirty one days and we're into a new year.

As this is the last newsletter before the new year, I'll wish HAPPY HOLIDAYS to you and your family.  Have a fun, safe holiday season.

In another 6 weeks we'll be hosting the Olympics here.  We know these events will cause some havoc with a few of our classes.  For some locations we may not know how much until just before the games.  Please stay in touch with the community centers to keep updated on changes.

We have made some changes to classes for the new year - adding some, deleting some, and adjusting some.  We hope you like what we've done.

We will be offering a couple of FREE demo classes at Mount Pleasant and Sunset Community Centers
.  Please take advantage of them.  You'll find them at www.intoyoga.ca/classes.htm.

Class times at Greentree have been adjusted, and we've added a Pilates class on Tuesday nights.

Renfrew Community Center is now offering Baby Sign Language classes.  These have been very popular at other locations.

A Gentle Yoga class has been added at Riley Park Community Center.  These classes would be suitable for anyone.  Particularly seniors, people with injuries or health issues, or newbies to Yoga.

Try our Yoga on the Ball classes at Kerrisdale Community Center.  Using small balls, you'll learn to create space and open the body, freeing it of stress, while doing some Yoga postures incorporating the balls.

Check out our website, www.intoyoga.ca or go straight to our "classes" page at
www.intoyoga.ca/classes.htm.  Classes are subject to change without notice (particularly through Olympic times), and may not get posted.  So please stay abreast of activities by contacting the community center you wish to participate at.

Here's what else you'll find in this newsletter.

Yoga For Weight Loss

There are Many Benefits in Yoga, Losing Weight is One of Them

By Scott Z Henderson

Reducing stress and increasing flexibility are two things associated with yoga. Most people however do not realize that yoga can help them lower their cholesterol, eliminate harmful toxins, and lose weight. It can even help with controlling the urge to eat unhealthy foods.

Focusing on the mind, body and spirit when done properly, yoga's benefits are many. Combining deep breathing, relaxation, and limbering exercises, yoga helps to ease anxiety, improve your coordination, strength and posture, and help you to lose pounds and inches.

The body burns more calories by the process of regular deep breathing as opposed to short shallow breaths. In fact one study shows that deep breathing burns up to 140 percent more calories than riding a stationary bike.

Yoga stimulates your internal organs increasing metabolism which helps you lose weight. Yoga also reduces stress hormones and increases insulin sensitivity which pushes your body to burn food for energy not to store it as fat. Yoga helps you to control your posture by tightening the muscles, making you look and feel better. Self control and discipline is also something that many yoga practitioners learn. The more you practice yoga the more you will be able to control the cravings for unhealthy food choices.

There are different varieties of yoga that use different techniques to provide certain benefits. Bikram yoga combines poses with cardio exercises performed in a room where the temperature is set to be above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. By exercising in the heated room your body will sweat out more toxins and will help you to lose more weight. Inverted yoga is a practice of posing with the abdomen above the heart. This helps to increase circulation, stimulate the brain and glandular systems and relieve pressure on the abdominal organs. By improving blood circulation you are helping to control your blood pressure. Another type of yoga, integrative yoga therapy, is practiced to help alleviate clinical depression, asthma, back pain, and arthritis.

One of the main tenants of yoga is ahimsha, a term meaning to do no harm to any living being. This is one of the main reasons why many serious yoga practitioners are vegetarians. By eating only plant based foods in their diet they are not consuming any foods containing cholesterol which is found only in meat, eggs, and dairy products.

It is never too late to get involved with yoga. If you are having difficulty losing weight, perhaps you should consider the practice of yoga. There is no limit to where yoga can take you mentally and spiritually and the physical benefits are many. Adding yoga and it's principles into your routine is a good way to improve your life.

  Recipe
Sesame-Almond Cookies (Yield 4 dozen)
www.drweil.com

Almost everyone loves cookies. Most store bought varieties, though, are filled with partially hydrogenated oils and other undesirable ingredients. These tasty little cookies are actually made with olive oil and a host of other wholesome additions like tofu and chopped almonds. Enjoy a cookie with a cup of hot green tea to make you feel that life is really worth living!

Ingredients:
3/4 cup whole-wheat pastry flour
3/4 cup unbleached white flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup sesame seeds, toasted
3/4 cup raw almonds, coarsely chopped
4 ounces silken tofu
1/2 cup light olive oil
3/4 cup light brown sugar, packed
1 tablespoon almond extract

Instructions
:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

2. In a bowl, stir together the flours, baking powder, and salt. Mix in the sesame seeds and chopped almonds.

3. In another bowl, mash the tofu and combine with the olive oil, sugar, and almond extract. Mix well.

4. Using a rubber spatula, fold the wet ingredients into the flour mixture. Roll the mixture into one-inch balls, flatten between your palms, and place them on ungreased baking sheets. Bake the cookies about 10 minutes, until the edges begin to brown. Remove from the cookie sheet and cool on a rack.
