Thank you to everyone who visited us at the Wellness Show at Canada Place Feb 1-3.  We had a great time!

Our Sanskrit Chanting Workshop was a success.  Fun and learning was had by everyone.  Thank you to all who attended!

1)    Spring Class Schedule

Our new schedule will be out probably about mid March.  Be sure to see what's being offered by visiting http://www.intoyoga.ca/classes.htm.  We have Yoga classes ranging from Beginner to Dynamic Flow, Prenatal, Family, Partners, Baby & Me.  Try our Pilates classes or check out the Baby Sign Language.  And we still have Body Rolling, Yoga That Fits and lots more too!


2)    Dynamic Flow Yoga

Comprised of a series of vinyasa asanas (flowing postures), this class will give you a solid connection to the breath as you flow through a cycle of postures designed to awaken and build a powerful level of energy and heat in the body. 3)    Partner Yoga

Creating union is the essence of Yoga.  Creating unity in postures with another person can cultivate a sense of balance and well-being offering valuable insight and understanding into any loving relationship.  The practice of partner yoga explores the understanding of postures, the importance of breathing techniques and the mind-body connection and allows partners to learn and explore aspects which are unattainable through individual Yoga practice.  Exploring Yoga with a lover, friend, family member or any other loving relationship can also deepen your interpersonal connections.  These classes can be found at Sunset Community Center. 6)    Camp Mooba Yogathon & Blissfest

This July two thousand people will participate in the Camp Moomba Yogathon & Blissfest to raise funds for children impacted by HIV/AIDS. The much needed funds raised from this event will help send a child to summer camp for an experience of a lifetime! 

Participants collect pledges prior to the event. They convene to practice 108 minutes of yoga in the largest outdoor yoga class in Vancouver. UBC Thunderbird Stadium will host Western Canadaís largest gathering of yoga instructors, yoga students, health and wellness professionals, and regular folks who share our passion for love and bliss! This event has quickly become Vancouverís most anticipated annual yoga event and is already in its 6th year.

But wait... itís not just about yoga, thereís a Blissfest Marketplace (a showcase of sustainable consumer products, clothing, services and delicacies), a fashion show, and musical performances by Eileen Rothe and the Ghost Brothers! You get all of this and more for a $20 donation!

7)    Try this Pose

HALF MOON (Ardha Chandrasana)

 


I have a sneaky suspicion that this graphic may not turn out.  It looks fine in my copy, but I've had troubles uploading it.  I apologize if it doesn't show.  I hope my description is explicit enough.

Great for strengthening the legs and opening the entire body, this is definitely a more advanced posture.  This pose helps the blood flow back to the heart and improves circulation to head, neck, hypothalamus and endocrine glands in the neck and head.  Balance, co-ordination and memory are all improved.

1. Stand with your feet far apart, legs straight, and your arms at your sides.
2. Inhaling, bring your arms up and out to the sides in a 'T' position, parallel with the floor.
3. Exhaling, pivot on your right foot, bending the knee. Inhale.
4. Exhaling, bring the fingertips of your right hand to rest on the floor, by the outer edge of your right foot. Adjust your arm so it is slightly out and away from the foot. Inhale.
5. Exhaling, raise your left leg and straighten the right leg. Bring your left leg up either to hip level and parallel with the floor, or higher so that you have a straight line from the foot to the shoulder.
6. Inhaling, turn your chest towards the ceiling and raise your left arm up toward the ceiling. Look straight ahead or up into the palm of your hand.
7. Hold posture and breathe.
8. Inhale. Exhaling, bend your right leg lowering your left foot to the floor and slowly come back to an upright position.
9. Repeat on the opposite side.

Need to cheat a little?  Rest your bottom hand on a stack of books rather than the floor.  Try this with your back against a wall.  What a beautiful open feeling you can achieve!

Barley is high in healthy carbs, has a moderate amount of protein, and contains calcium, phosphorus and B vitamins. With its emphasis on vegetables and absence of meat, this soup is a natural fit for those who want to promote heart health.

BARLEY SOUP (serves 6)

3/4 cup pearl barley
11 cups vegetable stock
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
1 1/2 cups chopped onion
1 cup chopped carrots
1/2 cup chopped celery
1 cup thinly sliced mushrooms
Salt to taste
1/2 bunch parsley

1. In a saucepan, combine the barley and 3 cups of vegetable stock. Bring to a boil over medium heat, cover, and simmer for 1 hour, or until the liquid is absorbed.

2. Meanwhile, heat the olive oil in a large pot and add the onion, carrots, celery, and mushrooms. Cover and cook the vegetables for about 5 minutes, until they begin to soften.

3. Add the remaining vegetable stock and simmer 30 minutes, covered.

4. Add the barley and simmer 5 minutes more. Add salt to taste and ladle into bowls. Serve garnished with chopped fresh parsley.
