12)    Recipe

Tofu Carob Pie (1 - 9 inch pie)
from The Allergy Cookbook by Ruth R. Schattuck

I don't eat dairy, and I've been allergic to chocolate since I was a toddler.  So I found this great recipe that taste delicious in this cool book I picked up at a used book store.  I fed it to my family and they thought they were eating real chocolate.  Everyone had seconds!  My kids dubbed it "Poo Pie."  The reasoning will be obvious once you make it.

1 cup carob chips
1/2 cup honey
2 12 ounce soft tofu cakes
1 tablespoon Vanilla
1 Egg
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract, or to taste

1.  Over low hat, melt carob chips with honey.  Stir to prevent sticking.  Remove from heat. Set aside.
2.  To prepare the tofu, rinse cakes, pat dry, removing all surface moisture.  Whirl in blender until creamy.
3.  Add vanilla, egg, cinnamon, and peppermint extract.

4.  Continue blending while adding the honey-carob mixture.
5.  Bake at 425 degrees for 15-20 minutes, or until crust is lightly browned and filling has a dull appearance.
6.  Let cool completely on a rack before cutting.

13)    Chemicals Health and Pregnancy Study - Volunteers Needed

Newly Pregnant? Interested in learning about the chemicals in your environment?
The UBC Chemicals, Health and Pregnancy (CHirP) study is now recruiting 150 pregnant women from the Greater Vancouver area. The CHirP study is looking at the effect of certain environmental chemicals (flame retardants and stain repellents) on thyroid hormone levels during pregnancy. Participants must be in the first 15 weeks of pregnancy and be planning to deliver at BC Womens’ St Paul ’s or at home. Participants receive a free copy of their personal results (chemical levels measured in their blood and homes). For more information, please visit or contact Glenys Webster at 604-827-5454 or
